Disability Compensation
Tax-free payments for service-connected disabilities range from 10% to 100%. In 2026, a single veteran rated 100% receives $3,938.58 monthly. TDIU can pay at the 100% rate when disabilities prevent substantially gainful work.
Ratings are assigned in 10% increments from 0% to 100%.
You can file a claim online, by mail, in person, or with an accredited representative.
You can file for an increased rating anytime your condition worsens.
Payments are tax-free and paid monthly.
VA Health Care
Eligibility is based on your service history and discharge status, with expanded eligibility for combat veterans and those with toxic exposure under the PACT Act.
Most veterans need 24 continuous months of active duty, with exceptions for hardship or disability discharges.
Combat veterans get enhanced eligibility after discharge.
Care includes primary care, mental health, specialty care, and prescriptions.

Education
The Post-9/11 GI Bill helps pay for school or job training based on your active-duty service.
Generally requires 90+ days of active duty after September 10, 2001, or a service-connected disability discharge after 30 days.
Covers up to 36 months of tuition, a monthly housing allowance, and a books and supplies stipend.
Benefits do not expire if your service ended on or after January 1, 2013.
Benefits can be transferred to an eligible spouse or dependent child.
Housing

Employment
Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E), also called Chapter 31, helps veterans with service-connected disabilities prepare for and keep a job.
Available if you have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% and an employment barrier.
A Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor builds a personalized plan across five tracks.
Services include resume help, job training, education funding, and job placement support.
Generally must be used within 12 years of discharge or your first VA disability rating.
Family and Survivor Benefits
Spouses, dependent children, and survivors of veterans may qualify for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, education benefits, and other support. See the full guide for details.
