The One-Year Rule: Your Main Deadline
For most VA decisions, you have one year from the date on your decision letter to file a decision review. This is the most important deadline to know.
The VA schedules it automatically after you file a claim
It is free to you
It can be in-person at a VA facility or with a contracted provider, or by telehealth
The examiner writes a report for the VA rater — you do not get a copy automatically
The 60-Day Rule: Board Appeals
If you file a Board Appeal and choose the Evidence Submission or Hearing option, act promptly to submit evidence or request a hearing date.
The 90-Day Rule: Board Evidence Submission
For Board Appeals with the Evidence Submission option, you have 90 days from the date of your Notice of Disagreement to submit new evidence. After 90 days, the record closes.
What If You Miss a Deadline?
Missing a deadline is serious, but it is not always the end of your case. You may be able to file a new claim, request a good-cause extension, or seek help from a VSO.
